There are pretty much no leagues or cliniques for these sports where I live. We do have school teams, but I’ve tried them, and they don’t really teach you anything. (I am on them, though.) How could I learn to get better at these two sports on my own? I don’t have any family members who know much about either one, and I’m limited on supplies. I have a volleyball and basketball, but I don’t have any nets for either sport. (And my parents aren’t willing to invest in them) I don’t have a volleyball court near me (Although there’s a beach volleyball-style court a few miles away, but it takes too long to walk to), but I am near a basketball court. But it’s about two miles away, so I only get the opportunity to go once or twice a week, because sometimes I get home late because of other plans. So how can I get better at the two sports even with these obstacales?
1. I can’t get a net. It’s not the price, it’s our area.

2. My “other plans” are things I can’t avoid. They’re either projects/schoolwork or after school sport teams.

3. I know that I need to practice, but what I’m asking is /how/ to I practice. I don’t know many of the drills that most players go through, let alone any of the skills that should be performed in games. (And I can’t practice if I don’t know what to do. ;] )

I’m from the Philippines and 3 networks here are covering the Olympics, but since volleyball is not a popular sport here compared to basketball, I doubt if they would give volleyball matches a chance for airtime. Thanks!

I actually have two questions about volleyball. One inquiring about the “barrel roll” used for digging. Can someone with experience and mastery describe each step and what you have to do to do a barrel roll. I was also wondering how you know if you have shin splints because I have pain in the side of my leg near my shin that hasn’t gone away for about a week and a half now but I don’t want to go to the doctor if it’s just common pain/slight injury to the muscle. Thank you =)
That is good advice Jordan, but I already read that online on one of the how to sites. I wanted to see if someone had anything different but thanks. Do you happen to live in Florida?
Haha, it is pretty hard to explain, just seeing if someone says something that will click. Thanks for trying, everyone! =)

Volleyball is an extremely difficult sport to photograph due to the ball and players moving so fast and sudden. At the last game I tried, I played with different presets, aperture, ISOs, and shutter speeds. Nothing seemed to work just right. I’m constricted to using no flash and I’m stuck with yellowish gym lighting. I have a Sony Alpha and the next game is tomorrow. Any suggested manual settings or other tips so I can get the best pictures as possible?
(I also have access to Photoshop so I can change lighting and anything else I need to afterwards.)

I’m pretty strong, but my volleyball serves sometimes don’t even make it over the net. Tryouts are comign soon and I was wondering if you knew any way to increase my distance on serves.
