Last year, our park district set up a sand volleyball court and it was working out splendedly until late in the season when the cats moved in and made the court their own personal sandbox… which I don’t need to tell you led to nobody using the court anymore.

We cannot use a fence because of where the court is located and we really don’t want to resort to feline homicide.

Any suggestions to what we can do to make the court less appealing to these animals?

Cats + Sand = Litterbox. Cats don’t have reasoning ability, so they don’t know that is a volleyball court, they just know it’s sand. Just be civic minded and cat friendly, and have people bring a plastic bag and a scoop when you are going to use it. Is it really that big of a deal? Then you and the cats can both enjoy public access to the park.

There are repellants you can safely use outdoor for flower beds and such — I don’t know of any reason you couldn’t use it in a volleyball court. We used it around (but not in) my toddler’s sandbox and it worked fine — the only reason we didn’t put it in was because of high potential for prolonged skin and mouth contact.

Tabasco sauce or cayenne pepper has bee known to repel cats. Just sprinkle around the perimeter of the volleyball court. Or you can try a cat repellent powder or spray. They’re easily found at a pet supply store.

Cover the court with a tarp- you can get cheap blue tarp from any Lowe’s or Home Depot- put rocks or bricks on the ends every few yards to prevent the wind from getting under it and blowing it away.
