Kuvu asked:

I will be starting my Freshman year this fall, and am interested in participating in volleyball. I have played volleyball in 7th grade, but did not have a chance to in 8th grade. I can set and bump pretty well and do underhand serves, but can’t do an overhand serve. I’m also not sure I can spike (we never did them in 7th grade so I never learned). So what should I expect of high school volleyball (sports overall)? What will the tryouts be like? What should I bring/wear to tryouts? Are there any ways for me to better prepare and work on serves/spikes? Thanks.

hmm… normally to make the freshmen team. you have to be able to overhand serve. but not everybody is a hitter. i play outside hitter and middle hitter. havent had tryouts yet, but theres not many people trying out. hmm. :]

Be ready for lots of passing and serving drills. I’d say an overhand serve is key to making a good team. Don’t worry about being able to spike or not, it’s something I’d say can be picked up on easily. There are also defensive positions on the back row that would require little to no spiking.

You can work of serves and spikes with another person or against a wall.

You should wear typical volleyball attire which includes a t-shirt, spandex (or shorts if you’re uncomfortable), tennis shoes, and knee pads. You should also bring water.

Good luck!

It sounds like youve had some pretty good volleyball experience!! I think you know pretty much everything the coaches in freshmen v/b want you to know! Just make sure you practice on your weaknesses, other than that, freshmen volleyball is pretty easy to get into, at least it was for my school! Good luck!

you have to be able to spike and serve over hand with an open fist at my school. so you should probably work on that.
